Anglo - Saxon Finds

Disc brooch Anglo-Saxon, 5th century

An exquisite gold disc brooch. The circular base plate supports a crouching feline being bitten by a pair of fanged-jaw animal heads. Disc brooches formed part of female costume in the early Anglo-Saxon period. This example is likely to have been imported to Staffordshire from southern Scandinavia or perhaps northern Germany.

Found by a metal detectorist in south Staffordshire.

Purchased by The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in 2006, with financial assistance from the National Art Collections Fund, the V&A Purchase Fund, The Friends of the Potteries Museums & Art Gallery and The Headley Trust.

Accession number: STKMG: 2007.LH.5
