Chesterton Roman Fort
To the north of Newcastle-under-Lyme, this site was excavated in 1969 to 1971. The archaeologists found the south-eastern defences of the fort and were able to estimate the approximate size and position of the Roman site.
A road leading from the south-west gate may have led to Wroxeter (Viroconium Cornoviorum), which is 48km away. The fort may only have been occupied for a short time, during the Flavian period, late 1st to early 2nd century AD.
