Roman Villas

Engleton villa

This was built in the late 2nd century AD close to Watling Street and the Roman settlement of Pennocrucium (Penkridge). The building, which was surrounded by a boundary ditch, was a 'winged corridor house'.

One of the wings was a bath house, which was separated from the main house due to danger of fire. The Romans enjoyed taking baths and the people who lived in this house were lucky enough to have their own.

A plan of Engleton villa's bath house shows these rooms, which were kept at different temperatures. Tepidarium - moderately heated Frigidarium - cold plunge, not heated Caldarium - very hot, like a sauna

Hales villa

near Market Drayton, was built in the late 1st century AD. The house, built of stone, was rectangular in shape with 4 rooms joined by a corridor. A bath house was added in the early 2nd century
