Coronet

Male coronet. Crimson velvet trimmed with ermine, white padded silk lining. Wide silver band supporting six orbs which signify status as a Baron. Golden pinnacle in centre covered with gold bullion thread lacing and an interwoven gold threadflower. Impressed hallmarks: TH, lion passant, crowned leopard, L and duty mark. Part of the Bagot collection.

This coronet, which Lord Bagot wore to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, was handed down to him. It was originally made for the coronation of King George IV and was worn by Wiliam, the second Baron Bagot. A coronet is not worn on any occasion apart from a coronation.

Like the coronation robes, some parts of the coronet symbolise the status of the wearer. The six silver balls, known as 'pearls' show that Lord Bagot is a Baron. The circlet around the bottom is made from silver gilt (silver coated with gold) and is hallmarked for 1821.
