Object of the month
Roman Gold coin
two very fine first-century gold coins which were deposited in the ground at Shenstone, near Wall, in South Staffordshire. The coins were manufactured at known mints: Aureus 1. was made in Lugdunum - modern-day Lyons - the capital of Gaul, in A.D. 15-16. Aureus 2. was minted in Rome in A.D. 75.
They form part of a hoard of coins which cover the period from B.C. 136 - A.D.75, deposited within a few miles of the Roman fort at Wall, south Staffordshire sometime after A.D.75. There was much legion movement in Britain at the time the hoard was deposited. The hoard contains a lot of military and Legionary issues, so it would not be unreasonable to assume that this treasure was buried by a military person who had perhaps come here with Agricola (the new Governor of Britain) in A.D. 77-78.
