Artists and Printmakers
14 Jan 12 - 24 Jun 12
This exhibition is based on work taken from the Museum’s outstanding print collection, some of which have not been on display since 1925, and features some of the most significant artists of the twentieth century.
In particular the show will focus on a group of artists who worked to promote the art of lithography and who were associated with the Senefelder Club.
The club was formulated in 1908 and took its name from Aloys Senefelder who discovered lithography in 1798. It provided a forum for artists to express their creativity through the medium of lithography. It also sought to educate the public with the aim of elevating lithography to the same status as etching, a highly regarded and established artform at the time.
Many significant artists of the twentieth century were either members of the Club or contributed to their exhibitions. The exhibition includes work by British artists, Frank Brangwyn and CW Nevinson and international artists, Matisse and Forain. There will be talks and workshops running throughout the exhibition, please visit our website, stoke.gov.uk/museum, for the latest events.
