Friends AGM followed by lecture at 7.30 p.m. by Miranda Goodby, Collection Officer, Ceramics at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery:

Emigrant Potters: How Staffordshire Workers founds the American Pottery Industry

In the 1840s, the Potters' Union recommended emigration to Wisconsin to its members as an alternative to the low pay and poor conditions in the pottery industry. The story of this failed project has often been told.

What is far less well-known are the stories of those Staffordshire families who emigrated independently during the 1840s to found their own factories across the USA. This lecture draws on the letters and accounts sent back by these emigrant potters to their families and friends in Stoke on Trent.
