Real World Science for Secondary schools
Real World Science is a national project led by the Natural History Museum which aims to engage and inspire students using museum science collections. As the West Midlands partner for Real World Science, we at Stoke-on-Trent Museums have been able to expand our free programme of exciting science activities now available to Y5 & Y6 whilst maintaining our sessions for secondary students.
This means that local schools have, on their doorstep, all the benefits of the REAL WORLD SCIENCE programme developed with The Natural History Museum, The Manchester Museum, The Great North Museum, Newcastle and Oxford University Museum of Natural History.
Pupils can look forward to stimulating science sessions in our museums between now and March 2012 featuring relevant, hands-on practical work, using rarely seen material from the museums' collections and up-to-the-minute demonstrations.
The programme provides a range of science based activities which extend the curriculum and provide an alternative context bringing science to life.
Our sessions are free of charge and designed to give students opportunities to:
- engage with museum and university scientists,
- go behind the scenes to see science in action
- participate in fun and inspiring science shows, practical workshops and study days.
We aim to raise aspirations, help counter the decline in post 16 science uptake and inspire all-comers, from Year 5 to Year 13.
The advertised programme includes:
- Why Classify? - on adaptation
- Beetling About - on classification & evolution
- Great Shakes - on the dynamic Earth
- Gallery Shoot - digital photography & making decisions
- Hoard Hunters - on metal detectors and treasure hunting
- Try Rocketry - design, make & test pneumatic rockets
- Fossils, Microfossils and a Blind Date - lab work
- Building Bridges - make & test man carrying structures
- Steaming Ahead - on steam technology
- Microbes & Disease - on the history of health technology
- special How Science Works events
