- Additional Notes: Lamps were manufactured throughout the Empire and could have been transported over long distances. Most were made in moulds, producing a large number of standardised shapes and designs. Lamps were important sources of artificial light, but also a means to demonstrate the owner?s status, identity and beliefs. The number of lamps that could be used to light a building would have been a strong indicator of wealth and social class. The eagle motif symbolises imperialism and victory and is associated with the Roman god Jupiter.
