- Summary: Plate with the profile of a woman and acanthus border. Tin-glazed earthenware, brightly painted.
- Additional Notes: Reserves painted with female profiles occur on maiolica from all the major pottery centres, including, most famously, the belle donne wares of Faenza, to which this plate shows some affinities. The bold acanthus border decoration, which has no convincing parallels in Faenza maiolica of the first half of the 16th century, resembles the foliate decoration on some Deruta wares of c.1500-1550, suggesting the plate may have issued from a minor pottery centre in Emilia or Umbria. To complicate the matter further, the acanthus border also resembles the decoration on a 17th-century Montelupo jug.
