Emma Bridgewater Spot On for 25 years
29 May 10 - 26 Sep 10
Emma Bridgwater has been successfully producing pottery in Stoke-on-Trent for 25 years and this exhibition celebrates the anniversary with a commemorative display of wares charting its development. The exhibition draws on the historic archive collection from the Bridgewater factory, with its rare samples, specials and one-offs, as well as pieces from the Museum’s own collection.
As many of the well known factories of the area including, Doulton, Spode and Beswick have ceased production, Emma Bridgwater has grown from strength to strength. The company, based in the historic Eastwood Works, Lichfield St., Hanley, in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent, is now one of the largest earthenware employers in the UK.
This hand produced and decorated pottery can be seen in leading department stores across the country including John Lewis and Debenhams and is gaining an international reputation.
The centrepiece of the exhibition will be a kitchen dresser and table showing the range of current production. These beautiful designs are reminiscent of English lazy summer days, afternoon tea, picnics and garden parties, a truly British institution! Whatever the summer brings this year, this exhibition promises to conjure up images of an idyllic summer afternoon which you can remember during any gloomy rainy days to come.
There will also be a selection of design artwork and photographs on display as well as footage showing how the pottery is made and decorated. After enjoying the exhibition why not visit the nearby Emma Bridgewater factory and pottery cafĂ© and ‘have a go’ yourself?
A selection of Emma Bridgewater pottery, stationery, cards and textiles will be on sale at the Museum. More information can be found at www.stokemuseums.org.uk and www.emmabridgewater.co.uk
