"Going Underground" New Display
“Going Underground”
New Display Until 27 February
Being a coal miner in a deep mine was a demanding and hazardous job.Essential items of equipment were given to miners, many of which helped to improve health and safety in the mines.
With the introduction of the National Coal Board in 1947, which nationalised the mining industry, many items became standard issue. "Life's little luxuries" were important too; these were things that made the miners long shifts underground bearable.
The material for this display has been donated by Keith Meeson. As a local lad - born in Chesterton in 1945 and having worked at Holditch Colliery for 8 years from 1960 - he had a passion for preserving some of the fast disappearing coal industry heritage of North Staffordshire.
