- Additional Notes: Théodore Deck (1823-1891) is credited with starting the art pottery movement in France, setting up a workshop with his brother in 1858 after years of travelling Europe and gaining ceramic experience.Like potters such as William de Morgan in England, Deck was primarily a designer and chemist whose trained workforce produced pottery for him. Throughout his career his design demonstrated a wide range of styles including Japanese, medieval, Islamic and Renaissance designs. This decoration is in the style of colourful Japanese Kutani wares, the production of which had been re-established in Japan during the 19th century. His achievements were recognised in 1878 when he was created Officer of the Legion d?Honneur and in 1887 when he became Art Director for the Sèvres porcelain factory.
